- We only have one cruse of oil left.
- Syrians defiled a sacred Jewish temple in Jerusalem.
- Well, let's light the menorah for the dedication at least.
- The Maccabees cleaned it up and prepared to rededicate the temple.
- They found only one jar of sanctified oil that was still sealed. It was only enough oil to light the menorah for one day.
- Despite not having enough pure oil to last for a single day, they decided to light the menorah anyway.
- The menorah miraculously stayed lit for eight days while new oil was being prepared. The Maccabees took this as a sign that the Jewish people were watched over by God.
- We light the menorah to celebrate the miracle of the oil for the dedication of the temple.
