- Banquo: You shall be king
- Macbeth and Banquo get back from battle. They have just talked to the witches in the woods who hailed Macbeth thane of cawdor and king, and Banquo’s heirs kings.

- Ross: The king knows of your success and he is very pleased with you. “ every one did bearThy praises in his kingdom's great defense, And poured them down before him.”
- Who's here?
- Angus: We are sentTo give thee from our royal master thanks,Only to herald thee into his sight,Not pay thee.
- Ross and Angus tell Macbeth and Banquo that they have done well on the battlefield. So much so that king Duncan gives the title thane of cawdor to Macbeth.
- Glisser: 3
- But I can’t be thane of cawdor! The actual thane of cawdor is still alive
- And it is with my greatest pleasure, that I name you thane of Cawdor.
- This can’t be true, can the witches tell the future?
- The thane still lives, but he has betrayed Scotland and is therefore being sentenced to death
- Ross and Angus tell Macbeth that the king has named him thane of cawdor. Banquo and Macbeth don’t believe it to be true.
