In his story "Harrison Bergeron," Kurt Vonnegut makes the point that total equality is not worth striving for despite what many people believe. It is a mistaken goal that is dangerous in both execution and outcome. This is because in order to have complete physical and mental equality among all Americans, the government in Vonnegut's story tortures its citizens. I think the point Vonnegut was making is that society should make an effort to value individuality and fairness, in which everyone receives what they need to prosper, instead of universal equality.
