I'm going to work at the factory with my friends and relatives
Many young mayan children (mostly girls) an women will work in maquila's help themselves and their families and avoid poverty
These industries seduce the children with modern desires to entice them to work for themMany children and young adults will work in these factories rather than their families farms and small businesses
Meanwhile the industries make a huge profit because they do not have to pay the female workers as much as they would if they were menThis is one of the biggest reasons why they prefer female workers over men
The children work long and hard days in unsafe working conditions while making barely enough to support themselves
Another reason why these companies prefer female workers because of their "'natural' dexterity in performing the tasks at hand"
Over time, the children will become detached from their own cultures since they are surrounded by a "modern" one
Tonight we are having tamales!
Industrialization in Guatemala has resulted in unsafe working conditions (especially for children), poverty, violence, and a loss of culture among the young Mayan workers who are constantly surrounded by globalization and and capitalism
