  • With tensions heating up and a rebellion on the horizon after the colonists felt that the British had violated their rights far too many times, British troops were sent to occupy the city of Boston. The people of Boston were highly upset, and the rude manner of the troops did not help matters.

  • On March 5, 1770, a fight broke out between a crowd of Bostonians and several British troops. The Bostonians started throwing sticks and stones at the troops.
  • After one soldier was knocked down, the soldiers fired at the crowd, killing five colonists.
  • The tragedy was called "The Boston Massacre" and was used as anti-Great Britain propaganda.

  • The tragic occurrence led to a stronger boycott of British goods, leading the British to repeal the Townshend Acts, except on tea, and the colonists ended their boycotts, except on tea. Trade with Britain resumed.

  • Some colonists were still upset with the current situation and still wanted to resist British rule. In 1772, Samuel Adams revived the Boston committee of correspondence, which was an organization used in previous protests. Colonists formed more committees of correspondence, in order to resist British measures.
