  • I´m Squanto
  • Will he be sent by God?
  • After exploring the area, the Pilgrims decided to take the Mayflower across the bay and disembark at a place they named Plymouth. In late December they began to build houses and a meeting room called the Common House.
  • No sir, we respect them.
  • There will be no problems unless you look for them.
  • The first winter was very difficult. The pilgrims had arrived too late to plant crops that year. The weather was cold and severe. Almost half of the 102 pilgrims died before spring. Only six or seven of them had the strength to take care of the others.
  • Good harvest friends
  • In March 1621 a Native American named Squanto from the nearby Wampanoag tribe visited the Pilgrims. Squanto stayed with the pilgrims and taught them how to plant corn, fish, and extract sweet syrup from the maples.
  • Another Native American who visited the pilgrims was Massasoit, the chief of the Wampanoag people. Squanto helped negotiate a treaty of peace between Massasoit and the pilgrims. The Wampanoags and pilgrims vowed not to attack each other.
  • In the fall they decided to celebrate the harvest. They invited Massasoit to attend a Thanksgiving banquet. The Wampanoags brought venison to prepare and eat. The pilgrims counted on geese, wild turkeys, lobsters, and cornbread. Even today Americans celebrate it.
  • We have to do this every year.
  • In 1621 William Bradford was elected governor of the colony. He served as governor for more than thirty years. During the following years, other groups would join the Pilgrims in the area we now call New England.
