  • James Oglethorpe made himself known in Britain for putting immense effort into trying to reform London's prisons, and to help the large amount of poor people. When his friend, Robert Castell, died in prison because he was put in a cell with someone who had smallpox, just because he couldn't pay his debts. He saw first hand the terrible conditions prisoners were subjected to, so he made it his mission to change things. Oglethorpe, and some of his colleagues, came up with a thought to help the poor. They thought of making a new colony in North America that they could shape to fit their ideologies.
  • In 1732, both economic and military considerations had taken over as the main factors of the proposed voyage. This along with Oglethorpe's persuasive arguments allowed for him to granted a charter by King George II himself. James and 114 other passengers set off towards North America, where they settled at Yamacraw Bluff, where James acted basically as a governor substitute. Sadly, the original idea behind Georgia being a safe haven for debtors and the poor had been basically abandoned, but their place rose farmers, bakers, and anyone who the Trustees would be able to help in the production of valuable resources like silk and wine. James's ideals would still have a large impact on the colony, like how he opposed the idea of slavery and was friendly towards people of all religion.
  • As the city of Savannah was being built, and as Oglethorpe was now seen basically as the leader of the whole thing, he started focusing on other important things. One of those was introducing himself to the local population of natives, which was the Yamacraw Indians. He wanted friendly relations with the natives, which is exactly what he received with chief Tomochichi. Tomochichi was the chief of the Yamacraw tribe, and he wanted nothing but peace with the English. Him and Oglethorpe both worked together to help one another when ever they could. However, it wasn't all peaceful, because in 1739 the War of Jenkins' Ear broke out with the Spanish. Oglethorpe immediately assembled a decent army and set out on a failed attack on St. Augustine in Spanish Florida. However, he would continue to battle the Spanish until he was required to go back to England in order to face accusations of misconduct placed upon him by an officer.
  • In 1744 James had the accusations put against him discharged. Later that same year he got reimbursed by Parliament. In 1744 Oglethorpe also met Elizabeth Wright in London. They got married shortly after and settled in Cranham Hall, which was Elizabeth's estate that she inherited in the small town of Cranham. In 1745 he briefly served in a military campaign during the Jacobite uprising, where he was court martialed due to controversy related to the strategies he used in his campaign. As Oglethorpe was now longer in Georgia, the Board of Trustees began to relax some of their restrictions on things Oglethorpe denounced, like alcohol and slavery, which led to him stop getting involved with the Board of Trustees. This led to Georgia becoming an official royal colony in 1750, because their was almost no Trustees leed left.
  • In 1754, James was defeated in a bid for reelection, which effectively ended his Parliamentary career. During the seven years which started in 1756 and ended in 1763, James quietly left Britain to fight the French with his friend James Keith under many different names. James returned from the war in 1760, where he and his wife lived a nice social life in Britain. Eventually Oglethorpe lived to see the American Revolution, and the colony he helped found, become independent. On June 4, 1785, James met with James Adams where he expressed "Great esteem and regard for America."
  • On June 30, 1785, James Oglethorpe died peacefully at the age of 88 due to illness. He was buried at All Saints' Parish Church in Cranham.
