- Although Della has been saving up her money, she only has $1.87 to buy Jim a present.

- Della goes to Madame Sofronie's to sell her hair in order to buy Jim a good gift.
- Resolution
- Jim and Della exchange gifts. Both of them are confused.
- Jim and Della put away their gifts for the moment.
- They realize they don't need material things as long as they have each other. Then they hug.
