- The play opens in the Helmer's living room, introducing Nora, her husband Torvald, and their three children. Nora is shown as a spendthrift, while Torvald is a newly promoted bank manager.

- Mrs Linde
- Nora's old school friend, Mrs. Linde, visits and Nora reveals that she secretly borrowed money to finance a trip to Italy to improve Torvald's health.

- Dr Rank, a family friend, visits the Helmers.

- Nils Krogstad, a bank employee, threatens to reveal Nora's secret debt and the fact that she forged her father's signature to get the loan.

- Nora tries to persuade Torvald to keep Krogstad in his job at the bank to prevent him from revealing her secret.

- On the way to the dinning room Rank and Torvald wisper to each other, and Mrs. Linde and Nora talk on th eway there as well.
