After the issue of the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, the united statesrealized that they needed to get stronger if they were to keep up with the powerful nations of Europe. The United states decided that they needed to colonize weaker nations and territories in order to obtain more land, resources for factories, markets for their finished goods, and new areas to live for their growing population
