- Abe Lincoln won the election. He recieved a higher percent of popular votes over any other candidate. Lincoln won every North state. The North had outvoted the South.
- The Confederacy
- Lets be Confederate!
- Lincoln did not want to upset the southern states. What the Republicans feared happened, and South Carolina held a convention to leave the union.
- Reactions to Secession
- After everything that happened, people still wanted to save the union. D.C. tried to work out a last-minute compromise. A southern leader then stated, "No human power can save the union."
- Presidential Responses
- In Febuary 1861, states met in Montgomery, Alabama to form the "Confederate States of America".
- People celebrated in the streets of South Carolina. Although other southerns had stated that their, "heart has been torn by the destruction of my country."

- President Buchanan's term was not yet over and he sent a message to congress saying that the southern states had no right to secede. But, Buchanan also had no power to stop them.
