  • Since we are only planting cotton and not food, and we ran out of money, I don't know what we are going to do to eat!!
  • Lets make a deal! Let us use your land, and we will give you textiles, alcohol, and food in exchange! (completely unfair trade)
  • This land looks perfect for growing cotton! (That will make us so much money!)
  • Were going to have to ask the British for help.
  • Umm... okay. (Is this really a fair trade?)
  • Of course! We would be more than happy to get you and your family food! However, in exchange we will need more land and cotton.
  • Hey, I am really sorry to ask but would you be able to get my family and I food? We don't have any money and we don't know what to do.
  • The Africans became dependent on the British for basic necessities, like food. This is because they planted cash crops (cotton) in the fields that used to provide their food.
  • The British take over lots of land in Africa to plant cotton (cash crops). They benefit greatly, but the Africans become dependent of the British due to their economic power.
  • Glisser: 2
  • Oh my gosh, we have so much food! I have land that I can plant all the food I need with.
  • Before British
  • No! We need this land to plant cotton! You agreed to plant only what we say in our deal!
  • Hey, I wanted to talk to you about planting something else in the fields, like food?
  • The British take over all the power and they don't let the farmers plant anything other than cash crops, including food.
  • Glisser: 3
  • After British
