The old man's roommate cautiously opened the lantern, but not without notice of the old man. The old man shot up out of bed-alert to his roommate's presence. Both of them stood there in a tense silence, the low-light conditions making it impossible for either one to see the other.
Do I hear-?is that my roommate-?
"Who's there!?"
Be quiet, take your time, rushing things won't help me.

After 5 minutes of tense silence, the old man settles back down in his bed, his eyes still open, trying to shake away the thought that someone was in his room. His roommate continued opening the lantern until a singular ray of light fell upon the old man's vulture eye which vexed him so. His rage was boiling over, any second he would strike the old man.
Focus, this needs to be done right.
But the sheer thought of that eye, let alone looking at it-.
