- The setting of this short story presumably takes place in the early 1900's, and the geographical location of the story takes place, on a carribean island named "Ship Trap Island". Ship Trap Island is characterized as having: high cliffs, rocky shores, and a dense jungle that feels like a maze. The locations that the short story takes place on are: the boat that Rainsford is on at the beginning of the story, Ship Trap Island, and General Zaroff's house.
- Climax
- Rainsford; after having a talk with his friend Whitney on his boat, Rainsford hears three gunshots, and whilst inspecting what happened he falls overboard, and swims to the nearest island; Ship Trap Island.
- Falling action
- Rainsford spots a house on the island, and rings the doorbell. A large man with a beard opens the door, and points a rifle at Rainsford. Rainsford keeps telling the man; whose name is Ivan that he is not a looter, but a hunter from New York. Soon after another man exits the home, and introduces himself as General Zaroff, and informs Rainsford that Ivan is deaf. They go in for dinner in General Zaroff's home. Soon the general reveals that he does not hunt animals, but humans. The general and Rainsford agree to play the game, but only if Rainsford will be returned to a nearby town if he wins.
- Resoloution
- Rainsford sets up three traps for General Zaroff, and all failed. The first trap "The Malay Mancatcher" only ended up injuring the general's shoulder. The second trap "The Burmese Tiger Pit" only killed one of General Zaroff's dogs. The third trap "The Tree Knife Trap" killed Ivan instead of the General.
- Rainsford was hearing General Zaroff's dogs getting louder and louder, so he jumped in the ocean to escape them.
- After jumping into the ocean; Rainsford sneaks into General Zaroff's house, and presumably kills General Zaroff. After that he sleeps in one of the beds in the house.
