- During the following years, vaccination became accepted, and replaced variolation. And, the virus used to make the vaccine changed from cowpox to the vaccinia.

- On May 8th, 1980, smallpox was officially declared eradicated from the earth, the first disease to have been done so to. And with that, smallpox was no more.
