The gold rush in California ended in 1855.

Fortunately another gold rush started on the Thompson river and the Fraser river in 1857.
Many unemployed California miners headed North to British Columbia.
10,000 people went and there was a threat of USA taking over the BC mainland so they made James Douglas the governor and got royal engineers to dispatch military presence and survey the region to provide technical assistance in building roads and towns.
