- Bassanio traveled to Belmont with his friend Gratiano and got engaged to Portia. Gratiano got engaged to Portia's maid, Nerissa. Both women gave their husbands rings and made them promise to never lose it or give it away.

- Bassanio received a letter that Antonio's ships were wrecked and he was imprisoned. Bassanio explained everything to Portia and she offered to marry him at once so he could pay off the debt. They get married the same day, along with Gratiano and Nerissa.
- He only owes three thousand ducats? Pay him more and tear up the bond. We can be married at once. Then you will have the legal right to the money.
- My oldest and dearest friend, the kindest man in Italy, had signed a bond with Shylock! He owes three thousand ducats!
- Bassanio met with Antonio in prison. The day of the payment had already passed, there was nothing to save him now. Meanwhile, in Belmont, Portia sent a messenger to her cousin, Dr. Bellario, a lawyer asking him to send her a barrister's clothing. In this disguise, with Nerissa as her clerk, she would go to Venice and speak in Antonio's defence.
