- Edward learns how to deal with losing those that he has come to care deeply about. Perhaps his most devastating loss was when Sarah Ruth died.
- Edward's body and heart heal throughout his journey. One example of this is when he is thrown overboard and alone in the ocean, his heart is broken and mends again.
