  • Rising Action
  • After World War II, the Soviet forces blockade off West Berlin because of rising tensions between themselves and the Western Allies. In response to the blockade, Allied forces started what is known as the Berlin Airlift to airdrop supplies into West Berlin. This decision was made by President Truman and Winston Churchill. One of the pilots in the airlifts, Gail S. Halvorsen, known as the Candy Bomber or Uncle Wiggly Wings, left a lasting image for the Berlin Airlifts.
  • Climax
  • During the first few flights delivering supplies, Gail S. Halvorsen was running low on fuel and needed to discard more supplies in order to make it back to base. With quick thinking, Halvorsen tossed the candy he had been hoarding out the window into the crowd. German Children looked up in awe as they got pelted by the chocolate bars and gum.
  • Falling Action
  • Over the next few airdrops, Halvorsen continued to discard and toss out heavy bricks of candy. Nuclear bombs weren't the only deadly threat from the sky during the Cold War. The children however, having never had such a sweet pain, went crazy over the bombs, as if they were the Chinese with Opium. The children learned to recognize him as Uncle Wiggly Wings because he was so bad at flying that he would always have a wobbly plane.
  • Conclusion
  • Seeing Uncle Wiggly WIngs land, children came running up to the plane like starving zombies. Their clothes torn and eyes predatorial; they were focused on the Candy Bomber. Halvorsen, in fear started hurling handfuls of chocolate at the approaching. Kids were getting sniped left and right, the Candy Bomber threw handkerchief grenades full of hard candy in hopes of fighting off the demonic children.
  • Through this encounter, Gail finally realized that the children were from a country that had never known peace or candy, so he had a change of heart. The kids weren't after him, he had only misunderstood their intentions. So he began packing extra candy for the hungry children and tying handkerchiefs to them. Instead of bombs, they had little parachute care packages from above that would no longer hurt the kids.
