- In 1957, the first satellite called Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union. This lead to new scientific, military and scientific developments.

- 1969 saw the development of Arpanet. This was the first real network to run packet switching technology, allowing computers to connect and send messages.

- In 1974 a proposal was published to link networks together in a "inter-work" proving that data could be transported between them. This is called CCP/IP.

- In the 1970's email and the @ sign was created and popularised.
- In 1991 the first web page was developed. Its purpose was to explain how the world wide web worked.
