- A place is a part of the Earth's surface that someone thinks is special to them. Everyone has their own special place.
- So an example a special place could be your bedroom.
- Or a swimming pool!
- Interconnection refers to the ways in which all things (both living and non-living), events and processes on Earth are connected. No place exists in isolation.

- Scale is referring to how big a problem is. Is it a local problem, national, regional or global.
- Sustainability is the ongoing ability of the Earth to supported life.
