- William Herschel noticed that red light felt warmer than other colors of light.

- Using a prism, Herschel spread the light into the different colors.
- Glisser: 3
- This red light seems hotter than the other colors. I wonder why.
- Using a thermometer, he measured the temperature of the different colors.
- Glisser: 4
- He found it got hotter towards the red end of the spectrum.
- Glisser: 5
- He moved the thermometer just outside the red light and, to his surprise, he found the temperature on the thermometer increased even more.
