  • Don’t do it, Judson, It’s horrible — it’s murder.
  • The law doesn’t punish burglary by death; so what right have you —
  • When it comes to protecting my property I make my own laws.
  • Marcia and Judson Webb are preparing to go back to the city as fall approaches their small cabin when Judson notices that someone had stolen some of his liqour.
  • I’ll walk down the road and say goodbye at the farmhouse
  • Marcia walks in and Judson laces the booze with rat poison pellets. Marcia, alarmed, tries to talk him out of his decision, but he is set on exacting revenge.
  • Marcia and Judson continue arguing, bringing into play his belief that he is above the law.
  • Here, take this; it’ll pull you together.
  • Marcia relents and leaves, going to warn Alec's wife. Judson puts the poisoned whiskey back on the shelf.
  • I’ve made my pileby taking chances. If I should die, you can do as you please. The stuff will be yours.
  • Someone had to know.
  • Judson remembers that he has to grab his hunting boots and put them back into the cabinet from their drying place on a table outside. As he goes to fetch them, however, he trips, and gets knocked out by hitting his head on the table.
  • They belonged in the closet, so leaving the door open he went to fetch them from the heavy, rustic table on which they stood, along with his bag and top coat.
  • Alec the area's caretaker finds Judson and he slowly regains consciousness, albeit in a daze. Alec offers him a shot of the poisoned whiskey, and he took it.
