- In the beginning of the story, Odysseus' men begin to panic when their oars are taken by something they're unsure of. In order to keep his men going, Odysseus gives his men an encouraging speech to continue, saying "Friends, have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome, is it now, then when the Cyclops penned us in his cave?".
- Stay strong men! We've faced dangers much greater than this!
- Odysseus, sir, help!!
- Odysseus!!
- After sailing further, the crew comes face to face with Odysseus and his crew, and quickly begin picking them off. As Odysseus describes it, "Then Scylla made her strike, whisking six of my best men from the ship. I happened to glance aft at ship and oarsman and caught sight of their arms and legs, dangling high overhead. Voices came down to me in anguish, calling my name for the last time.".
- This story ends with Odysseus and the rest of his men managing to escape the two dangerous beasts. Odysseus says "The rocks were now behind; Charybdis too, and Scylla dropped astern.", which confirmed their escape.
- Odysseus: We made it out... we must continue forward, for the men we lost on the way.
