“Once upon a time, there was a magical land called The Land of Magic. in The Land of Magic everyone was always happy. The Land of Magic is a world of fairies and peace.” the storyteller told the amazed children. One of these children, me, was especially appalled. I loved listening to the storyteller’s wonderful magical stories about The Land of Magic. But something was off in this story. I raised my hand.” Yes Miss Charlotte?” The storyteller asked.” “Why did you say ‘was’?” Charlotte asked.
“The storyteller sighed.”The Land of Magic is no more.” Charlotte almost started crying. She reached into her backpack for her favorite book,”The Land of Magic. The storyteller had given it to her. You see, she had grown up to be poor. Magic could save everything. She decided at the end, she would ask if it was true. So when it became time, she tapped the storyteller’s shoulder.
But at that exact time, the woman was traveling home. With a swish of her wand, she was taken with her. she felt her feet be swept off the floor of the library. She squeezed her eyes shut. She felt the whoosh of air around her. She opened her eyes slowly, cautiously.
In front of her, was a glittering palace. “What?” she gasped. “Omg, omg, omg, omg!!!!” she screamed.
“How did you get here?” the woman demanded.
“Hi, I’m Charlotte, and I seemed to have followed you….” she answered.
“Oh, I suppose that’s fine, but I need to get you home. I’m the fairy godmother.”
She reached into her robes for her wand, and Charlotte watched. When she found it, the fairy godmother waved it, but nothing appeared. Then Charlotte noticed that the fairies on the wand had disappeared. She had shown us this wand once, claiming it to be magical, and there were once fairies on it. But they were gone.
“You lost you’re fairies!” the young girl exclaimed.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“On your wand.” Charlotte replied.
The fairy godmother looked down, but before she could speak, a man in a silk suit strutted up the hill.
“Xanthous! What is it?” the fairy godmother asked.
He had a look of terror on his face, like he had just seen a ghost.
“Magic isn’t working!” he said.
“Oh dear.” The fairy godmother said.
“I know. Hey, the fairies on your wand. They’re……...gone.”
They both nodded sadly. Charlotte knew something was going terribly wrong. She had to do something. What was happening in this magical land. What about her parents? Were they worried. Had they called the cops? Never mind home! She had things to focus on here.
She spoke up,
”Excuse me? Why is the magic not working? Is it because….I…...came here?”
The fairy named Xanthous looked at the small girl standing before him. He saw that she clearly thought she had done something wrong. But, she was human!
“Only two humans had ever been here, and they were the grimm brothers.” The fairy godmother said.
What are you doing here?” He asked sharply. Then he said, kinder tone,” Nothing is your fault. I don’t think it is anyways.” He frowned.
The fairy godmother frowned at Xanthous.
“She is just a child. It’s definitely not her fault! Why would you think such things? I expect more of you. I will-” she was cut off by a group of fairies flying towards her.
“What is it?” The fairy godmother asked.
“I’ve heard that magic isn’t working! And ... is that a little girl” They all asked.
“Yes, magic is gone. By the way, this is Charlotte. Charlotte, this is Rosette, Tangerina, Emeralda, Skylene,Violetta and Coral. You already know Xanthous.” The fairy godmother said.
“And, they are?” Charlotte asked.
“The fairy council of course.” she confirmed.
This was all too much. Charlotte fainted.
She saw a little girl just like her, walking through an orchard. It was Charlotte, age 4. She was wearing a yellow dress with a green bow walking towards a boy. He was medium size, with brown hair and blue eyes, wearing a blue diamonded shirt, and brown pants. He was age 7.
“Hello, Charlie.” The small girl told the boy.
“Hello Charlotte.”The boy named Charlie said.
“Charlie, I have heard things about a loved one disapperaing today. Who do you think will go?”
“I don’t know Charlotte. I’m here to protect you.” He hugged her.
Suddenly the sky turned a deep red. Fog covered everything. Charlotte hung on to her brother. She had to stay safe. But he was torn from her arms. She screamed and cried as her brother was whisked off into the redness and fog.
With a gasp, Charlotte realized that this is what she had been trying to remember for years. This was right before she was taken to Hroth, Kansas. This was her older brother Charlie! When they extracted him from the family’s beloved orchard, they removed all memories of him. Charlotte grew up an “only child”. But that didn’t explain the red sky and the fog. Was it magic? Charlotte gasped and clambered out of the bed she was laying in. She grabbed her backpack and reached inside. Fingers shaking, she pulled out a faded picture of a little boy standing next to a little girl. Behind them was a vast field. A tear slid down her cheek onto the picture.
“They told me it was mom and her brother. But I think that’s Charlie and me.”
“I think she fainted from shock.” The fairy godmother whispered.
“I have a brother. They lied. Where is my brother? Is he dead.
“MY BROTHER!!!!! He’s surely dead.” Charlotte cried out in dismay.
“Child, your brother is long gone. There is no way to save him.” The fairy godmother said.
Suddenly, she felt pain. The fairies flickered and Charlotte moaned.
“What’s happening?”
“Evil is at work! Your brother could be alive. I lied. But we have little time to find and save him!”
Just like that, the tremor was over. The fairies collapsed weak. Charlotte herself felt sore.
“All the children taken in 1945 were given to the sea witch. She said
