  • Sacrifice
  • It isn't fair and it isn't right!!!
  • Foreshadowing
  • Mood
  • This scene shows what the sacrifice is in The Lottery. In the story, the author says, "Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones," and "Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her." This text evidence shows how the villagers closed in on Tessie to sacrifice or kill her.
  • The children collecting rocks and making a pile at the beginning of the story foreshadows Tessie's death because at the end of the story Tessie gets killed by the villagers with stones. The text says, "eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square..." This quote shows how earlier in the story, children were gathering stones together for when the villagers would need them for the lottery.
  • Shirley Jackson creates the mood by showing how the characters are worried or anxious about the results of the lottery. The text states. "By now, all through the crowd there were men holding the small folded papers in their large hand, turning them over and over nervously." This shows how the men are scared of the results.
