טקסט Storyboard

  • After living in Louisiana for a while Stella gets a job white passing, "Everyday Stella comes home from work and imagens a life as a white woman, "An evening lying about the apartment, and she might think, I wonder what Miss Vingnes would be doing right now, Then there she was, Miss Vignes lounging in her lush home, a fur rug peeking between her toes, not this cramped studio..." (Bennett 188). While white passing Stella finds herself thinking about the life she could have if she did pass as a white woman. This was one of her first thoughts that may have played a role in her transition from a black woman. Stella thoughts soon turned into her actions, as not much later in the novel Stella had ran off with her boss and became a white woman.
  • As Stella finds herself becoming attached to Loretta she soon finds it all coming to an ending because of Kenedy, "Stella stared into her daughter's face, seeing everyone that she had ever hated, then she was looking at her daughter again, gazing at her with watery eyes, a hand covering her reddened cheek" (Bennett 199). Stella takes the action of slapping Kenedy due to her taught behavior of calling Loretta's daughter "nigger". Stella slaps Kennedy because she realises the mess Kennedy has now brought and how it will most likely affect her relationship with Loretta. She also slaps Kennedy because she realises how she has truly turned white even though her and her daughter still have black in them. She saw more disappointment in herself then in Kennedy because she knows that Kennedy would have only learned that word from her. Her anger gets so built up that she acts on slapping Kennedy in her face.
  • At Blake and Stella's Christmas party, Stella becomes the talk of the room, "When the others exchanged amused galances, she blushed. She hated being the butt of a joke. .."I'm Just asking if your friend from across the street is coming"... Stella paused, her heart thrumming. "She's not my friend", she said" Bennett 194). Stella deals with conflict very poorly due to her secret as white passing. She fears that if the whites focus on her too much then they will realize her secret or ask too many questions and become suspicious. So, she stays out of conflict to keep herself off the focus and in people's mind. This christmas party situation is the perfect example because it shows Stellas flight when she's in fear response.
  • Stella finds herself building the friendship she thought she'd never have while white passing, "By Christmas time, Stella had spent so many afternoons at Loreta's house that, out of habit, she told Loretta one Monday that she'd see her tomorrow. "It's Christmas Eve, honey," Loretta said, laughing and Stella laughed too" (Bennett 191). Stella is in shock when a black family moves in across the street in her white neighborhood. By surprise Stella soon finds herself at Ms. Loretta's house forming an unexpected friendship. She blames this friendship on their children being friends and having playdates, but in reality Stella likes hanging out with Loretta. This bond and comfortability might be formed by the fact that Loretta is black, and Stella feels connected to her old self through Loretta.
  • What does the character think about?
  • What actions do they take?
  • Stella is just a quiet woman trying to bring as little attention to herself as she can while white passing,"She was trembling, her light brown eyes, flashing, and the neighbors, moved by her spontaneous passion, applauded. She never spoke up in their meetings... she hated feeling everyone watch her, and wanted to run shrinking at her own wedding. But her shy, faltering voice only gripped the room more" (Bennett 146). Stella begins life as the soft-spoken, studious twin. Always overshadowed by Desiree, Stella craves this white passing life apart from her sister. When she realizes how easy it is to pass for White, she creates a new identity for herself. Which makes her even more quiet. Stella realises in a community of all whites she doesn't want to stand out or her identity can be mistaken for not one of them. She doesn't want to cause any suspicion or any abnormal activity outside of the community.
  • What do they do well/poorly?
  • Stella's husband Blake feels deeply about his love  for Stella, "He could sense by the shape of her shoulders if she was in a bad mood; he could read in the slant of her handwriting when she hurried. But dating Stella felt like unfolding an entirely new mystery" (Bennett 190). Blake is a hard working man that  loves his wife Stella and finds her fascinating in her own innocent way. He has sympathy for the lie that Stella leads in life which is the fact that she grew up with no family and as an only child. He feels no inkling that Stella isn't who she  really is.
