  • Chromosomes have sister chromatids. Remember when we said chromosomes are shaped like an “X?” An “X” has two lines and think of those two lines as the sister chromatids.

  • CENTROMERE
  • And there is a structure in the middle of the chromosomes called a centromere. Centromere is in the middle because “centro- = center,” easy to remember, right? And this centromeres hold the sister chromatids together.
  • Thanks to our centromere, we're stuck together now!
  • If we say all DNA needs to be copied before mitosis, it means that the chromosomes need to be copied.
  • Chromosomes have two sister chromatids.

  • Remember that the number of chromosomes IS the number of centromere. Look at the next square!

  • So when the DNA IS copied, your homologous chromosomes will now have 2 chromatids, called a diploid chromosome, but because they still only have 1 centromere, you will have just 46 chromosomes with 92 chromatids.
  • Before your DNA is copied, there will be only one chromatid, called a haploid chromosome, and if there is a centromere attached to it, you will still call that a chromosome because you are counting the number of centromeres it has. A normal human being has 46 chromosomes. No more. No less.
