  • फिसलना: 1
  • The frontier is moving too fast. We can no longer have 'One Big Reservation.' You must agree to these new boundaries so our settlers and railroads can pass through safely
  • You ask us to stay in one place, but the earth is wide. How can we live if our lands are cut into small pieces?
  • As white settlers moved West via the Oregon Trail, the U.S. government abandoned the idea of one "One Big Reservation." The Concentration Policy (1851) forced tribes into specific, defined territories. This was intended to reduce conflict between tribes and open up the best land for white settlement and the transcontinental railroad.

  • Decimation of the Buffalo (1865–1880s)The buffalo were the economic and spiritual foundation of the Plains Indians. To clear the path for railroads and undermine Native resistance, the U.S. encouraged mass hunting. Between 1865 and 1885, buffalo populations plummeted from millions to just a few hundred, effectively destroying the tribes' ability to live independently of the government.

  • We did not seek this fight, but we will protect our families. Today is a good day to defend our way of life.
  • The Sioux are powerful, but we have the numbers and the winter on our side. Eventually, they will have to come in to the agencies or starve.
  • Resistance flared as tribes fought to protect their lands. While the Sioux won a major victory at the Battle of Little Bighorn (1876), the overwhelming "attrition" strategy of the U.S. Army—targeting food supplies and winter camps—eventually forced most tribes onto reservations.
