After Troy refuses to sign the football papers, Cory comes to him upset and confused, hoping for some kind of explanation. But instead Troy responds, “I told you I wasn’t gonna sign them papers. (Wilson 40)” It’s a cold response. Cory had worked so hard and saw football as his way out, a chance to build a future. Troy shuts that down without even trying to understand how much it meant to him. ,

When Cory questions whether his father even likes him, Troy responds sharply “You live in my house, sleep you behind on my bedclothes, fill you belly up with my food... cause you my son. Not 'cause I like you” (Wilson 39). This shows how Troy sees being a father more as a duty than a relationship. He provides basic needs, but he doesn’t feel like he has to show affection or emotional support.

During the final, heated fight between Troy and Cory, Troy says, “You a man now. That’s what you is. You just another nigger on the street to me” (WIlson 81)This quote is one of the harshest things Troy says to his son. It shows that, in his eyes, Cory has crossed a line that breaks their father-son relationship. By calling Cory “just another” person on the street.
