F.D was a slave born in 1818 in Maryland, he lived with Master Hughes family in which where he learnedto Read and write thanks to Ms.Hugh.

F.D started heading into the woods and as he headed further in the woods he came across a friend named Sandy who was on his way to meet his wife. They Discussed F.D's situation meanwhile and Sandy handed him a root which he said he must carry by his side and in this way he'd never be whipped a white man again.
F.D later on returned to the field and Covey endedup to be in a bad mood which lead to Covey grabbing his Whip and F.D was feeling confident with his Root and Started to fight back which lead to a 2 hour fight between Him and Covey. Which resulted to F.D's mentality shifting being Him thinking hes free but physically he's still a Slave but now hes more confident inHimself
