  • Currently, only#160;4%#160;of all plastics in Singapore get recycled. This means that most plastics are incinerated after just a one-time use, losing#160;95%#160;of their material value. It also worsens pollution, as incineration and even recycling processes emit greenhouse gases.The problem is not plastic, but the way plastic is being used.
  • Additionally, poor waste management leads to plastic pollution in the environment. Every year, around#160;11#160;million tonnes#160;of plastics leak into the oceans, where it breaks down into microplastics that linger in the waters for hundreds of years.

  • This affects ecosystems and wildlife terribly. For instance,#160;over 50%#160;of turtles live with plastic in their digestive tract, hurting their ability to swim, hunt for food and avoid threats. It is expected that by 2050, there will be#160;more plastics in the ocean than fishes.
  • Plastic affects human health, too. It can be found in#160;the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.#160;The average person consumes about 5 grams of plastic every week – that’s#160;the equivalent of a credit card.

  • Did you know that Singapore's plastic recycling rate#160; is the lowest to the other waste stream? Singapore's recycling rate is at 4%
  • One reason the rate of recycling for plastics is low is that many consumers are not aware that there are many different types of plastics, and not all of them can be recycled, experts told TODAY.

  • Ms Teo pointed out that the contamination rate for recycled waste here is high, with close to 40 per cent of the recyclables collected from the blue bins not being recycled.#160;For plastics, plastic packaging that has not been washed and still has food remnants on it would be considered contaminated.
  • Agreeing, Ms Pek Hai Lin, executive director of non-governmental green organisation Zero Waste SG, said that contaminated and unsorted plastic waste would often be overlooked at the sorting facility and will therefore be incinerated instead.#160;That is why households should sort and wash their plastic waste at home before they recycle them, she said.#160;“(By doing so), we're really ensuring that we minimise contamination of these materials, and this can really increase the value of that material itself and increase the chance of it being recycled.”

  • Ms Jen Teo, executive director at the Singapore Environment Council (SEC), referred to#160;a#160;report it published in 2018, which found that close to 70 per cent of Singapore residents do not fully understand what plastics can be recycled.#160;
  • For instance, while PET bottles — those used to package carbonated drinks — and plastic bags can be recycled, straws, plastic disposable cutlery and styrofoam packaging cannot.
  • -mid long shot-today news
  • Associate Professor Tong Yen Wah,#160;from the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at#160;the National University of Singapore, said that#160;part of why recycling rates are so low here is because#160;not all plastics can be and are easily recycled.
  • -close up shot-pans to tote bag when tote bags is being said-video fades to black at the end
  • But of course, as a tote bag enhusiast, i want to encourage people to start using tote bag. Not only can you look fashonable with it, tote bags are also affordable, strong and durable.
  • With all that being said, I hope Singaporeans have learnt a little bit more about plastic wastage and reduce the usage of plastic.#160; I hope SIngaporeans will make an effort to reduce the plastic wastage and start using reusable bags or tote bags. Thank you for listening.
