Humphry Day was a British Scientist born in 1778. His Mum, Grace and Dad, Robert had 4 other children. He is best known for his scientific discoveries of different elements such as sodium and calcium. He was also a poet and an inventor!
Davy did experiments using a method called electrolysis (using electricity to cause a chemical reaction) which let him discover lots of new elements. He did this for many years and even became a professor during this time. He taught in lots of different countries and even became fluent in French!
I'm so BORED of being a surgeon, I'm going to become a CHEMIST! I can do my first experiments in the attic!

In 1802 Davy created the very first kind of light bulb! At the time he had the worlds most powerful battery, which he used to run electricity though a piece of metal which glowed as it got hot! This didn't last for very long and wasn't very useful for people to use. By 1806 he had created a form of bulb incased in a glass tube - he called it the ARC LAMP!
I've done it! I've made artificial light - I'M A GENIUS!!!
Why do all these explosions keep happening in the coal mines? There must be a solution!
You've done it once again Humphry!
The year is now 1815, and Humphry has designed the Miner's Safety Lamp (later known as the Davy Lamp) to stop the mines exploding! The lamp worked by reducing the heat of the flame which was causing the explosions. The Davy Lamp had a blue flame which got brighter if explosive gas was present, and also would turn off if oxygen levels got too low, acting as a warning to the miners to get to safety.
Humphry was also a poet and wrote over 160 poems. His poetry was mainly based around his career and human life itself. His poetry was praised by his friends who would often call him a genius.
