- Mr. John Marshall, I, plaintiff William Marbury, order that a writ of mandamus be issued to make Jefferson deliver my commission that was ordered by John Adams to act as a Justice 
- You have given me much to consider Mr. Marbury
- If I issue the writ, Jefferson could simply ignore it. If I refuse to issue it, it will show weakness in the supreme court...
- After considering your request, I have decided that Jefferson did indeed break the law, but I cannot issue a writ of mandamus, as extending the Supreme Court's jurisdiction would be unconstitutional
