I was born August 27, 1908 in Stonewall, Texas. I grew up on a farm with my 4 siblings, mom, and dad who was a farmer, state legislator, and businessman.
I graduated from Southwest State Teachers College ( Texas State University now ) in San Marcos, Texas in 1930.
In order to help pay off my education, I taught school for disadvantaged Mexican-American students in South Texas!

My political career began in 1937, when I was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat.
In 1960, John F. Kennedy, invited me to be his vice-presidential running mate. My presence on the ticket attracted the support of conservative Southern Democrats and helped lift Kennedy to a narrow victory over Richard Nixon.
Unfortunately, on November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. I was sworn as president later that day and immediately reassured a grieving nation that I would make Kennedy’s progressive vision for America a reality.
Soon after taking office, I declared “War on Poverty.” I actively pushed Congress to pass legislation attacking illiteracy and unemployment. I also made great strides in attacking racial discrimination by signing the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
