- Cindy Smith was an exceptional investigative reporter. She worked for the Daily Globe an up and coming newspaper outlet. She was one of the few women in her office but she held her own in a male dominated field

- She was always punctual. Most days coming into the office before everyone else. Already well into her work by the time her other coworkers came in

- Sir I am a brilliant journalist. this newspaper establishment has done so well with me here. And I work just as hard as all my other male coworkers. Please raise my pay so it is equal to what everyone else is getting paid

- At the daily globe she was the only women at the office. However, she was well respected and applauded for her talent as a journalist
- Good afternoon class my name is Esther Peterson! I will be your 5th grade teacher!

- However, she didn't feel that she was on equal footing with any of her male colleagues. She was making significantly less than them despite doing the same amount of work.They were on higher simply because they were men and she was below them looking up at them simply because she was a women.
- Esther was beloved by all her students. She was by far the most popular teacher at her school.

- So she went to her boss and asked him to raise her pay so it is equal to her male colleagues. But her making this request angered him and he said no
- Similar to Cindy Smith's story, Esther was also amazing at her job. She was one of the teachers who was commended for raising students test scores.However, as she was talking to one of her fellow teachers about pay she realized how much less she was getting paid for doing the same job of her fellow male teacher

- She went that day into the superintendents office. However, his reasoning for her getting payed less was saying that women did not work as hard as men and thus dont deserve to get paid equally
- Sir I am one of your best teachers. I outperform most of your other teachers. I put in the same amount of work as the male teacher. I wish to get paid equally to them
- You are a women. Women are not as hardworking as men.So no you will not get the same salary as them

- She began to climb the ranks. Her work advocating for women's equal pay and treatment in the workplace led her to be appointed by JFK to be the director of the US women's bureau. Later she was appointed by him as assistant secretary of Labor for labor standards making her the highest ranking women in his administration. She worked to inform him on women's issues
- I would like you to work for me. You can make a real difference here working for the government

- Esther was feeling angry and sad. She was feeling these emotions because she felt that she was not given the same respect as her male teachers. So she decided to write a letter detailing her frustration

- Cindy Smith was walking on her way to work when a headline in the newspaper caught her eye. She couldn't believe it.

- As Assistant Secretary of Labor for Labor standards she worked she lobbied members of congress and mobilized the public to support the Equal Pay Act of 1963 which would give women equal pay as men for doing the same work.
- Now she finally felt that she was on equal footing with her male journalists

- In 1963, The Equal Pay Act was passed as a bill. This bill required that men and women get paid the same for doing equal work in the workplace.
- Without a women in politics who understood how Cindy and so many other women felt about getting paid less than a man for doing the same work,there would have been no progress
