The story made me more insightful as to how important a parent's voice is when caring for children with disabilities. While reading, Gina's parents were faced with extreme fear and uncertainty when doctors focused on how hard Gina's illness would become, rather than giving her parents any hope. The bravery and love of Gina's Mom really stood out to me. She never gave up fighting for her daughter. I believe her persistence in getting the right care and services is what made Gina so successful. This taught me that as educators, we must always empower the child's family and consider their opinions. This story also emphasized the important idea that a child is so much more than their disability. Gina is filled with love, happiness, and a ton of potential.

4 Ways I Will Support Parents as an Educator
Open CommunicationAs an educator, I will always ensure that parents can reach me as efficiently as possible. I will have a stream they can reach me on at any time, such as Remind, and I will regularly check my emails. I would also send out weekly/monthly check-ins to ensure they always feel included and up-to-date. Value Parent OpinionsA parent truly knows their child best. I will always integrate their opinions when supporting their child in the classroom. I will also ensure they are present at decision-making meetings.Listening Without JudgementI will value the experiences of the parents and listen to them openly without any assumptions.Educating Parents About ResourcesI will make sure parents know about all the resources and services avaiable to them, so they can make the best possible decision for their child.
