I held that rope all my life!
Alex stands in front of her mother and holds the lantern between them. Alex does not remove her mother’s blindfold. Her mother slowly reaches up and removes it herself. Her mother looks directly at Alex for the first time. She does not step away from the lantern. Instead, she reaches toward its light.

Alex lights one lantern. Her mother carries the flame to another villager, who passes it to someone else. Soon, hundreds of lanterns glow throughout the valley. The old ropes are still visible, now covered with flowers and surrounded by light. The light moves from person to person until the entire valley begins to glow. The fog slowly disappears, revealing green hills that had been hidden for generations.

Years later, Alex sits beneath a large tree at the edge of the colorful valley. The original lantern rests beside her. A young child approaches carrying an empty lantern. Alex lights the child’s lantern. The child turns toward the mountain and begins walking, carrying the light toward someone who has not seen it yet. Behind them, thousands of lanterns continue to shine across Hollow.
