- The old charts call it `Ship-Trap Island...A suggestive name, isn't it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don't know why.

- It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home.
- The story starts on the deck of a yacht where Rainsford and Whitney are talking about a mysterious island that they are going to be passing. However, the men are unable to see this island through the dark night sky. Eventually, Whitney goes inside for the night.
- Climax
- Rainsford heard three gunshots from a distance. He stood up on the rail of the yacht to see if he could see anything through the dark night sky. He dropped his pipe from his mouth and lost has balance, causing him to fall overboard. The yacht continuted moving, and Rainsford could not get anyone's attention, as they were all inside. He was left, stranded in the middle of the water.
- Falling Action
- I hope he doesn't find me up here...
- After swimming to a nearby island, Rainsford searches for people on the island. Eventually, he comes across a large house, and meets Ivan and General Zaroff. General Zaroff invites Rainsford in, and the two share a common intrest of hunting. Rainsford and General Zaroff eat dinner together, while the General begins to tell Rainsford about his experinces with hunting.
- Resolution
- I'm so relieved I did not get killed by the general....
- General Zaroff continues to tell Rainsford about all the animals that he has hunted, and then discusses the fact that hunting all of those animals was begining to bore him, as besting them no longer proved a challenge to him. It is then where he begins to discuss his new type of game, which, Rainsford discovers, is humans.
- Hunting? Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.
- General Zaroff tries to convince Rainsford to go hunting with him, but Rainsford declines the invite. The general then explains to Rainsford how the game works for the people he hunts. Rainsford continues to refuse to hunt with General Zaroff, and requests to leave the island. Because he will not hunt with the general, General Zaroff decides to hunt Rainsford instead. Rainsford is given hunting clothes, food, and a knife, as well as a head start. The first place he hides is in a tree in the woods of the island.
- After setting two traps, both of which fail to stop General Zaroff, Rainsford is finally cornered. He jumps into the sea to avoid being killed, and eventually the general goes back to his house. After eating dinner, the general went to his room and turned on the light to find Rainsford waitng for him. The two decide one of them will be food for the hounds and one will sleep in the bed that night. In the end, Rainsford ends up being the one to sleep in the bed.
