  • Odysseus is out at sea for ten days and "upon the tenth/[] came to the coastline of the Lotus Eaters,/ who live upon that flower"(Homer 9. 34-36). Odysseus sends 3 of his men, 1 runner and 2 others, to scope out the land.
  • What have you done to Boe, Billy, and Bob?
  • I only gave them this sweet flower.
  • Odysseus' men approach a man who was "offering the sweet Lotus to [them]"(Homer 9. 43). The man intended no harm but to just give the Lotus as a gift.
  • Come on!
  • Odysseus' men ate the Lotus and "longed to stay forever"(Homer 9. 46). The men didn't ever report back to their ship, so Odysseus went out to find them.
  • I'm NoT gOiNg To RuN. PlEaSe UnTiE mE.
  • Since Odysseus' men "never cared to report, nor to return"(Homer 9. 45), Odysseus, worried, asks what the Lotus Eater had done to them. The Lotus Eater says that he only gave them some Lotus.
  • Odysseus "drove them, all three wailing, to the ships"(Homer 9. 47). Odysseus did this since the men refused to go to the ship.
  • Odysseus "tied them down under their rowing benches"(Homer 9. 49). Odysseus did this so they don't escape. He tied them to the bottom because if at the top, they would be able to possibly escape.
