  • Subsistence agriculture is a type of agriculture practised for the domestic consumption of the farmers!
  • It can be classified into two types- primitive, which includes shifting agriculture and nomadic herding, and intensive subsistence agriculture

  • Shifting cultivation is a method of farming pratised by tribes living in dense tropical forests
  • Mostly, tapioca, cassava, yam, millets, maize and beans are grown in this kind of agriculture
  • They clear a patch of forested land by cutting and burning the trees. That's why it is also called as SLAH AND BURN
  • It leads to deforestation and soil erosion
  • Nomadic herding, practised by nomadic people who graze their animals on natural pastures, move from one place to another in search of fodder and water
  • Animals like camel, sheep, goats, cattles and yaks are raised. it is confined to sparsely populated parts of the world
  • Intensive agriculture: practised in densely populated regions . Uses a large amount of labour
  • Farmers make optimum utilization of the land and grow two or three crops annually with the help of irrigation, high yielding varieties of seeds, and natural manures and chemical fertilizers
  • The major crops grown by this method are rice wheat , millets, oilseeds, cotton and sugarcane.Thank you!!
