- Halku was a tenant farmer who had saved three rupees to buy a blanket to protect himself from the cold January nights. When landlord came asking for rent, Halku's wife Munni advised him to pay after the harvest. But Halku who didn't want to lose his dignity, gave away the three rupees with a heavy heart.
- Halku and his pet dog Jabra came to guard the field at night but couldn't bear the cold. It was hard for him to manage without a blanket. Halku picked up Jabra, put him on his lap to keep him warm. Although Jabra was stinking, there was no resentment in Halku's innocent heart as he loved him unconditionally.
- Later, Halku decided to go to the near by mango grove so that he can light up a fire to keep themselves warm. Halku gathered leaves, lit a fire and sat before it. Suddenly, Jabra started barking. Halku realised that a pack of wild animals had broken into the field, when he heard the sound of cruching and munching.
- WOOF!
- It really hurt Halku to think of getting up from where he was. It seemed intolerable to go to the field in that cold and chase after animals which were eating his fine crops. With a firm resolve he got up but a gust of wind pierced him, forcing him to go back to the extinguished fire where he fell asleep.
- Halku woke up in the morning hearing Munni's voice. She was upset that he was having a fine time sleeping while the whole field was being flattened. When Halku asked her if she had just come from the field, Munni replied with disappointment that the entire field had been ruined.
- Looking at the trampled field Munni's face was shadowed with grief but Halku was content. When Munni told him that he would have to work as a hired labourer henceforth, he gave a contended smile. Halku was happy that he need not have to suffer guarding the field in the cold January nights anymore.
