George Hazel's 14 year old son was taken to jail by the U.S. Handicapper General and his men.
Ballerinas are dancing on TV screen
Yup (p. 1)
George was toying with the vague notion that maybe dancers shouldn't be handicapped. But he didn't get very far before another noise in his ear radio scattered his thoghts.
George tried to think a little about the ballerinas. They weren't really very good-no better than anybody else would have been, anyway.
George winced. (p.1)
I'd think it would be real interesting, hearing all the different sounds, said Hazel, All the things they think up.(p. 2)
Um, (p. 2)
I'm the Emperor!...I shall now select my Empress! (p. 4-5)
Clanking, clowning, and huge, Harrison stood-in the center of the studio...Ballerinas, technicians, musicians, and announcers cowered on their knees before him, expecting to die. (p. 4)
The Handicapper shot and killed Harrison and his Empress and instead of watching this happen, George, unable to pay attention, goes to the kitchen to get a beer.
These scenes show the absurdity of Harrison's parents acting like nothing terrible has happened to their only child. They seem to carry on with their day, making meaningless conversions about the ballerinas dancing on television. They were incapable of thinking about anything longer than a few minutes, which included their son being recently taken away from them or even his tragic death on the television they were watching. George was mentally handicapped with a government forced radio device. This was given to him to make George average, like every other citizen. Hazel was naturally just like everyone else. Unfortunately, this plan by the government left the citizens to be mindless humans who were just simply existing without any lasting independence of their own. They were completely government controlled, which was an unhuman like existence. The scene where Harrison is acting as a god, is ironic because that is exactly what the Handicapper General is acting like. This shows that people acting as the only authority over everyone else does allow for a well balanced, striving society. Humans are meant to exist as individuals, and not be exactly like anyone else.
