They searched everywhere. Gracie’s husband even went looking all around town but returned at 7am having no luck. He told Gracie that she needed to write to her friend and tell her there was a chip in the glass shoe and that they are getting it fixed. This will give them time to look for the shoe.
By the end of the week, they had gave up looking for the shoe. They decided they might as well look for another shoe. So they went from department store to department store looking for a replica of the one Gracie lost. They found one but it was worth 40 thousand francs, so they made a deal and got it for thirty-six thousand.
Gracie then came to know the ghastly life of abject poverty. The debt this shoe had put her in was crazy, but it had to be paid off. She was determined to pay it off. She wondered what would have ever happened if she never lost that one shoe. How little is need to ruin or save.
One Sunday, Gracie went for a walk to get some fresh air. She noticed someone very familiar. It was Mrs.Bridgewater they lady that let her borrow the glass shoes. She didn’t recognize Gracie at first. But, once she did, Mrs.Bridgewater couldn’t believe it.
Remember the shoes you lent me for the royal ball? Well, I lost one of them. I brought you another just like it. And, for the past 10 years I have been paying for it.
Gracie decided to tell Mrs.Bridgewater the truth about the shoe she had lost. Mrs.Bridgewater was in complete disbelief. Gracie explained to her that she had bought another one just like the one shoe she had lost and it put them in to deep debt. Mrs.Bridgewater was still in a complete shock.
How could you? Why, you brought it back.
Then Mrs.Bridgewater began to say, “Oh my poor Gracie! But, my glass shoes were only imitation . They were worth at the very most 500 francs.”
