  • John has worked tirelessly for years and has finally saved up enough money to buy a small farm in the Mississippi Delta for him and his family. He is proud for overcoming the racist systems in America. He is the first person to own land in his family.
  • Since the Civil War, levees have been built along the Mississippi River, preventing floods from damaging large swaths of land. However, in 1926, heavy rainfall caused the river to reach unprecedented heights... Engineers said the levees wouldn't be able to hold.
  • In April of 1927, levees near John's house broke. An endless river of water poured out flooded his land and his house, which he had worked so hard to get. More breaches occurred along the river and millions of acres of land was destroyed, including most of America's farmland.
  • 700,000 people lost their homes, and most found their way to refugee camps, which provided food, shelter, and medicine to those who needed it. However,
  • The camps were heavily segregated, and John and his family did not receive the resources they needed. They were neglected by the government, and John would never get back to his house which he worked his whole life for.
  • The Mississippi Flood of 1927 changed the way the government handles flood prevention. Levees were no longer seen as being a good enough prevention method. In general, this event serves as a good example for why it's integral to plan for the future, and why government action to prevent natural disasters is so important.
  • The segregation on the camps is a great example of how common discrimination was in that era and how it had serious consequences. The Great Flood remains the largest flood in American history, and so many different lessons can be learned from it.
