- Rhen Tellur (the main character) lives is a kingdom that is currently going through a disease with her father and mother. Her mother got the disease and she and her father are determined to find the cure.

- In this scene, Rhen is talking with her best friend and cousin, Seleni. The latest test cure has failed and Rhen has moved onto her last resort, the Labyrinth Trials. The Labyrinth Trials are series of trials that all boys have the choice of going through. The reward for winning is to get into a prestigious alchemy school. Girls are not allowed to enter the Trials
