- In Merry England in the old times, when good King Henry the Second ruled the land, there lived within the green glades of Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham Town, a famous outlaw whose name was Robin Hood.
- Robin and his band were outlaws and dwelled apart from other men.
- Up rose Robin Hood one merry morning when all the birds were singing harmonically among the leaves, and up rose all his merry men.
- For fourteen days we have seen no sport, so now I will go abroad to seek adventures
- Robin Hood took a road by the forest skirts, a bypath that lead into the backyard of a house. As he reached the backyard, he saw a tall stranger coming from the other side...
- No! you stand back because the better man is me!
- Now stand back and let the better man cross first
- And you sound like a coward!
- You sound like a dummy!
- Robin observed the stranger, measuring him from top to toe out the corner of his eye, and realized that he had never seen a chunkier man. Robin was tall, but the stranger was taller by a head and a neck.
- Nevertheless, I will prove my strength and fight!
- We will fight until one us lets go of the rope!
- The stranger pulled the rope so strongly that Robin fell backwards just like a pin does in a game of bowling.
- By this time, Robin's friends had arrived . . .
- Alright you beat me . . . can you stay and be part of my gang?
- If anyone can dig a hole deeper than I can, then I will stay.
- A digging match soon followed...
- You will now be Little John to me
- Robin's hole is deeper!! the stranger is going to stay!
- What is your name?
- John Little.
- At last, Robin Hood realized that not only did he have a gang of good friends gathered around him, but that he now had a best friend, Little John.
