  • Sigmund Freud theorized about the Id, the Ego, and the Superego which are often visualized as an angel and devil on your shoulder. The Id, the devil, is our desires and impulses and the Superego, the angel, is our conscious and our moral principle. The person in the middle, Arden, represents the Ego which is the controller of the two.

  • Adler is one of the first psychologists to theorize about birth order and its affects on personality and speculated that first born children were often perfectionists and had high expectations for themselves. Because I am a first born, he would assume I am the same and that I would exhibit these traits.

  • Carl Jung theorized about archetypes, one of them being our shadow. He suggested that everyone had a deeper unconscious with traits that the individual found uncouth or intolerable. He would imagine that the traits that I most dislike would be hidden in my unconscious or my shadow.
  • Carl Rogers believed unconditioned positive regard was an aspect of self-actualization. This acceptance is essentially acknowledging others feelings or actions without judging them for it and understanding where they are coming from. He would imagine that I would respond this way when my younger brother is being irritating or rude.
  • Costa and McCrae believed in 5 traits that made up our personalities, those being openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeability, and neuroticism. In this example they would see me as being very extraverted as I am cheerful, optimistic, and social.
