The theme of The Old Man and the Sea is to always fight hard until the end.
Evidence:“‘What a fish it was,’ the proprietor said. ‘There has never been such a fish’” (Hemingway p.g. 34 PDF). Explanation: The old man fought the fish until the very end, and in return he had brought back a fish larger than any the people at the Terrace had ever seen even though it was a skeleton he had the pride of catching something like that.
He wrote this book to entertain people about Santiago's struggles others may be able to relate to what Hemingway says.

The intended audience of this book was fishermen because there are some parts in the story were people who were educated in fishing would understand and others wouldn't.
