After Cromwell's death, the people decide to reinstate the monarchy. They are sick of the military and Puritan rule. Charles II returns from exile to rule. During his reign, he is known as the merry monarch. He is also known for good rapport with parliament.
I am so excited to be king. I will listen to Parliament and make England better and happy again!
After the death of Charles II his brother, James II gets the throne. The people and parliament are outraged because he is Catholic. He also appoints other Catholics to positions of power in the military and government.
King James II is Catholic and he appointing other Catholics to power! This will not stand!
I will appoint you all to positions of power!
Parliament decides to take action. They go to James II's daughter, Mary, and her husband, William to ask for them to be in power instead of James II. James II decided to flee.
We, the parliament wants to put you, Mary and William in power instead of James!
When William and Mary accept the throne they recognize the supremacy in parliament. Due to Stuart absolutism, they wrote the English Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights explained that supremacy was in parliament and the monarch had to listen to parliament.
